When Light Meets the Dark

"When the light meets the dark."

That lyric from Healing Begins by Tenth Avenue North was quiet foundation for When Dark Meets the Light, a reflection on spiritual death and renewal.

The painting was inspired by an unexpected conversation on the morning of my wedding. As I picked up my bouquet, the florist mentioned that white calla lilies symbolize death in certain cultures. I shared back that in Asian culture, white carries the same meaning. At first those symbols seemed jarring for a wedding day, but I have learned on my journey back to my faith that every lasting covenant asks us to lay something down so that something new may begin.

A bouquet of calla lilies gently bow above still waters, suspended between shadow and light. The painting considers it as the quiet threshold where grace begins its transforming work.

As the seventh painting in the Divine Maps series, When Dark Meets the Light marks the final surrender before renewal.
