We’re All Sinking (2025)

We’re All Sinking was painted during a season marked by answered prayers and quiet reminders of God’s provision. The title comes from the lyric “if grace is an ocean, we’re all sinking,” a phrase that lingered in my mind as I reflected on the overwhelming nature of divine grace. Instead of portraying drowning as despair, I painted the moment just before complete immersion, surrounded by waves of mercy and abundance.

The shell at the base mirrors open hands in benediction, symbolizing humility and readiness to receive peace, forgiveness, and blessing. Above it, a reciprocal descending wave pours inward, reflecting prayers answered in ways that felt both awe-inspiring and deeply humbling.

The painting’s luminous blue atmosphere is deeply personal. Its tones remind me of my father’s favorite color and the sound of his voice singing Great Is Thy Faithfulness on Sunday mornings before church while my mother played piano alongside the choir. While creating this work, I had also just begun building my fine art print studio, receiving grants, opportunities, and clients that arrived with unexpected timing. During that same season, my now husband proposed to me along the shoreline of Santa Monica beneath an ocean horizon that closely resembled the blue woven throughout the painting.
